Questions,answered.

Short answers to the things people ask most — before a bill, during one, and after.

01

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. Split Bill has no accounts at all. Bills are saved in your own browser — nothing is sent to a server, and there is nothing to sign up for or log into.

Does everyone else need to download something?

No, and that's the point. You enter the bill on one phone. Everyone else either reads the summary you paste into the group chat, or scans a QR code that opens the whole bill on their own phone in a browser. Nobody installs anything.

How do I enter a bill quickly?

Type the item name, press Enter, type the price, press Enter again — and the cursor returns to a fresh line. A ten-item dinner is ten passes through that one row, with nothing to open or close in between. Who's sharing and who paid are stated right under that row, and carry over to every line you add until you change them.

Can I reuse the people I split with often?

Yes. Save a set of people as a group — Family, Flatmates, the Thursday five — and start the next bill from it. Groups store names only, never any transaction history.

02

Splitting

How do I split something between only some of us?

Open the item and tap the people who shared it. Everything else stays as it was, and the running total updates as you tap. The line under the composer — “New items: shared by everyone, paid by Ana” — sets who the next items belong to, and can apply the same answer to every existing item in one step when you ask it to.

Can I split by exact amounts or percentages?

Yes. Each item can be split equally, by exact amounts, or by percentage. Split Bill shows what each person ends up paying as you type and tells you how much is still left to assign, so a split can never quietly fail to add up.

How do I add tax or a service charge?

Under the items, choose “Add tax or service charge”. Pick None, 5%, 10%, or enter your own as a percentage or a flat amount. Service is taken on the subtotal and tax on subtotal plus service, matching how most receipts print it. Charges belong to the receipt that levied them, so dinner's service charge is never added to the taxi.

Can I split a whole trip in one go?

Yes. Choose “Add another receipt” from the bill's ⋯ menu and you get a second set of items — dinner, taxi, hotel, the convenience store — each with its own tax and service charge. Balances are worked out across all of them together, and everyone settles once at the end. If you only ever need one receipt, you'll never see the extra structure.

What if something doesn't add up?

Settle up lists anything unresolved — an item nobody is sharing, a payer that was never set, a custom split that's short. Each one is a tap that takes you straight to the line at fault. Nothing is guessed at or quietly spread across everyone.

What happens if someone leaves the bill?

Their recorded items are never deleted. You can mark them inactive — history intact, hidden from new items — or move everything they paid and shared to another person. Outright removal is only offered when they appear on no item at all.

Can I undo a mistake?

Yes. Every meaningful change — items, people, who paid, who shares, charges, currency — can be undone. Use the arrows in the header on a computer, Undo in the ⋯ menu on a phone, or Ctrl/Cmd+Z, with Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z to redo.

03

Settling up and sharing

How does the settlement work?

We total what each person paid against what they owe, then work out the fewest payments needed to square everyone up. Instead of everyone paying everyone, you get the shortest possible list — usually one or two payments for a whole table.

What can I send to the group chat?

Settle up has a Share button with two versions of the same message. Simple is just who pays whom — the version most groups want. Detailed adds each person's share and the charges that made up the total. You see the exact text before you send it, and can copy it, use your phone's share sheet, or send it straight to WhatsApp, LINE or Telegram.

How do I move a bill to another phone?

Fastest is the QR code under “Hand a copy to another phone” in Share: the other phone scans it and opens its own copy of the bill. The whole bill is compressed into the link itself, so nothing is uploaded — it works even on a hotel wifi that blocks everything else. You can also export a CSV for a spreadsheet, or Alite JSON to import it back later.

Is a shared bill live?

No, and deliberately so. A shared link is a snapshot: the other device gets its own copy of the bill as it was when you shared it, clearly marked as a copy. Later edits on either phone stay on that phone — which is also why there's no account and nothing to leak.

04

Receipt scanning

Is receipt scanning really free?

Yes, and unlimited. Scanning runs on your own device using open-source OCR — no uploads, no subscription, no per-scan limit. The recognizer itself is downloaded once, the first time you use it, which needs a connection; after that your browser keeps it.

How accurate is it, honestly?

On a flat, evenly lit receipt it is very good. On a photograph taken at an angle across a table it will sometimes misread a digit — 9.00 as 9.60, say. That is why Alite reads the subtotal and total the receipt printed and checks the lines against them: a scan is only called verified when the receipt's own figures agree, and you're told plainly when they don't. Every line stays editable either way.

Does it pick up tax and service charges?

Yes. A printed service charge or tax line is read as a percentage where the receipt shows one, added to that receipt, and shared out in proportion to what each person ordered. You can uncheck either before adding.

Which receipts can it read?

Printed receipts in English and other Latin-alphabet languages, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean — including receipts that mix them. Choose the language before scanning; each non-Latin reader downloads once, the first time. Handwritten receipts and very long or creased ones are hit and miss, and typing the lines is often faster than correcting a poor scan.

05

Your data

Where is my data stored?

In your browser's local storage, on your device. That includes the names, items and amounts you type, your saved groups, and your currency and theme choices. None of it is uploaded, and we have no database of bills.

Do you track me?

We use Google Analytics to count visits and page views, so we know whether the product is useful. It never receives the contents of a bill — names, items, amounts and share links stay in your browser. Any tracking protection or ad blocker stops it, and the app works exactly the same without it.

Will my data disappear?

Bills persist in your browser until you clear them, or until your browser clears its storage. Private browsing and switching devices will lose them. Export anything you want to keep.

How do I get my data out?

From Settle up → Share the result → Download a file: a plain-text summary, an items CSV, a who-owes-whom CSV, or Alite JSON, which imports back into Split Bill with everything intact.
